Abstract

In modern conditions, sustainable development becomes the main concept of development. Rural development is one of the catalysts of sustainable development. Sustainable development of rural areas is of great importance for the economic development of the Republic of Serbia. Depopulation in rural areas and neglect of agriculture over the years led to numerous economic and social problems. The most important among them are: unfavorable demographic trends, underdeveloped infrastructure, fragmented agricultural holdings that are not market-oriented, low agricultural productivity rate and low income per holding, high share of agriculture in the rural economy, low degree of diversification of the rural economy, insufficient investments in rural areas, etc. Such a situation is unsustainable because it causes increasingly difficult living and working conditions in rural areas. The subject of analysis in the paper are the key problems of rural areas in the Republic of Serbia, which are precisely the most pronounced in the Regions of Southern and Eastern Serbia and Šumadija and Western Serbia, as regions with a dominant rural population. The aim of the work is to, in accordance with the analysis of the problems of rural areas, define priorities and possible directions for further sustainable rural development in the Region of the Republic of Serbia.
